Lunch within walking distance of the UTC offices

Westfield UTC sits in the middle of one of the densest office clusters in San Diego, and the lunch problem there is always the same: forty-five minutes, somewhere that is not a queue, and food that does not make the afternoon worse.

Our lunch end of the menu is built around that. Paninis, pinsa, salads and a bowl — things that are made quickly, eaten without ceremony, and do not require anybody to commit to a sit-down restaurant on a Tuesday.

The paninis

Five: Tuscan Chicken, Italian Roast Beef, Turkey & Avocado, BBQ Chicken, and Caprese.

A panini is pressed, which means the bread is doing as much work as the filling. Done properly the outside is crisp and the inside has gone soft and slightly molten; done badly it is a cold sandwich that has been warmed.

Caprese is the vegetarian one and the lightest. Italian Roast Beef is the heaviest and the one to avoid if you have anything demanding scheduled for two o’clock. Turkey & Avocado sits in the middle and is the most ordered, which is usually what happens to the sensible option.

Pinsa is not pizza, exactly

Pinsa is a Roman style, and the differences from a standard pizza are real rather than marketing. The dough carries more water, it is left to ferment considerably longer, and it is shaped by hand into an oval rather than rolled into a circle.

What that produces is a base that is light and airy inside with a crisp shell, and one that sits noticeably easier afterwards than a dense pizza base does. The long ferment is the reason — it is the same logic as a well-made sourdough.

It is also the reason pinsa is worth ordering at lunch specifically. A pizza at midday is a commitment. A pinsa is a meal you can have before going back to work.

The pinsa list

Margherita, Chicken Pesto, Pepperoni, and Chicken BBQ.

Margherita is the one that tells you whether the base is any good, because there is almost nothing on top of it to distract you. If you are trying pinsa for the first time, order that one and judge it on the crust.

Chicken Pesto is the most substantial of the four. Pepperoni is there because a menu without it generates complaints. Chicken BBQ overlaps with the panini of nearly the same name, so pick one or the other rather than both for a table of two.

The salads

Caesar and Caprese. Two salads is the right number for a café — enough to have a real option, not so many that none of them are made well.

Caprese is tomato, mozzarella and basil, and it is entirely dependent on the tomatoes, which is true everywhere and is the reason it is better in August than in February. Caesar is the one to order when you want lunch to be a salad without it feeling like a penalty.

The Açaí Bowl at midday

It appears on the breakfast end of the menu too, but it works differently at lunch. In the morning it is a light start; at one in the afternoon it is the thing to order when you want to eat something and still be useful at three.

It is the most popular order here among people coming from the gym rather than an office, which at UTC is a meaningful share of the lunchtime traffic.

The savoury croissants hold up at lunch

Bacon & Cheese, Egg & Cheese, Smoked Salmon, Smoked Turkey and Veggie are filed under breakfast but nothing stops you ordering one at half past twelve, and plenty of people do.

Smoked Salmon in particular reads as a lunch item more naturally than a breakfast one. If the panini queue is long and you want something quick, this is the shortcut.

What to drink with lunch

The refreshers were built for this slot — Blue Raspberry Lime Soda, Strawberry Rose Lemonade, Mango Dragonfruit Refresher — and an iced tea covers anyone who wants something cold and unsweetened.

An espresso afterwards is the better idea than a coffee alongside. Coffee competes with a pressed sandwich; espresso after it does the opposite and clears everything up. It also takes ninety seconds, which matters if you are counting them.

The rush, and how to miss it

Between roughly noon and one the counter is at its busiest, for the same reason every lunch counter in an office district is.

Arriving before 11:45 or after 1:15 changes the experience entirely — same food, a fraction of the wait, and a far better chance of a table. If your schedule has any flexibility at all, this is the cheapest improvement available to you.

If it does not, order ahead. Pressed sandwiches and pinsa both take a few minutes that you can spend walking instead of standing.

Taking it back to a desk

Paninis survive the walk well for ten or fifteen minutes; the crust softens a little but the sandwich is intact. Pinsa is the one that suffers most from being boxed, because steam trapped under a lid undoes the crispness that is the entire reason to order it.

The salads and the bowl travel best of anything on the lunch menu and are the sensible choice if the walk is longer than it looks on a map.

Feeding a team rather than yourself

A table of three or four is an ordinary order and needs no warning. A team of fifteen is a different thing and should be arranged in advance through the catering side, where the lunch and office menus exist specifically for it.

The difference is not snobbery about volume — it is that fifteen pressed sandwiches made to order at 12:30 holds up everyone behind you, and the same fifteen arranged the day before does not.

Where we are at UTC

Space 2270, off La Jolla Village Drive, inside Westfield UTC. On foot from most of the surrounding offices it is a short walk, and that walk is the main reason to use us rather than drive somewhere.

The counter is open from 8:30 in the morning straight through to 8 in the evening, Sunday to Thursday, and to 9 on Friday and Saturday. There is no gap in the middle of the day when the kitchen closes, which is not true of everywhere nearby.

Eating outside at midday

The patio is the better room for lunch for most of the San Diego year, and at midday it is also the faster one — the indoor tables turn over more slowly because people with laptops are sitting at them.

If you have a short window and want to eat outside, aim for the patio first and treat the inside as the fallback rather than the other way round.

If you do not eat meat

The vegetarian options are real ones rather than the standard items with something removed: the Caprese Panini, the Margherita pinsa, the Caprese and Caesar salads, the Açaí Bowl, the Veggie Croissant, and the Avocado & Egg Toast if you are happy with egg.

That is six distinct lunches without repeating yourself inside a week, which is more than most counters in an office district manage.
